An indoor-rated propane heater (4,000 or 9,000 BTU) for keeping one room livable during a winter outage. It has tip-over and low-oxygen shutoff, but it still burns fuel: crack a window, keep a battery CO alarm nearby, and don’t run it while everyone’s asleep. Never use a generator or grill indoors.

A battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm that keeps working when the grid drops, which is exactly when generators, grills, and space heaters come out. Sits on a shelf or mounts on a wall, with a loud alarm and peak-level memory. Put one on each level and near bedrooms.

A NOAA weather radio with alert mode, AM/FM, and two shortwave bands that you can run off solar, hand crank, its rechargeable pack, or AA batteries. It also has a flashlight, reading lamp, and a USB port to top off a phone when the power is out.

A clip-on lightning detector that picks up strikes out to about 25 miles and shows a rough distance, with a light and alarm when a storm moves in. Handy for spotters, ballfields, and hikes when you’re away from radar. Treat it as an early heads-up, not a replacement for official warnings.
